Ooh that smell

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

I was lifting in our gym yesterday when a man walked in and started stretching. I was currently doing lat pulldowns after about an hour of racquetball. Noticing a funky smell, I casually sniffed myself to make sure it wasn't radiating from me. Once in the clear, I decided to continue on to rows. The smell persisted and was definitely not coming from my boyfriend. I tried to proceed with rows, but came to the point where I was going to be sick because the smell was overpowering.   I wasn't in the position where I could move away and work on  another machine because it was our apartment complex gym.  I am not sensitive to smell, and can usually put up with a lot.  I am not one for unnecessary confrontation, so I decided to cut my session short and go home.

What would you do in this sort of situation?

Would you politely talk to the person?

Contact management?

  1. That's a tough one. I think we just have to suffer. At my gym there's always a funk. Especially in the weight room area. I don't know why. It's gross.

  2. I can deal with the smell of sweat. It's to be expected at a gym. Personal hygiene is a different story.

  3. I take the chicken's way out and talk to someone up above (for me, the trainers or HR since it is a work gym.)

If it is a normal sweat smell, fine, but if it is so bad you want to hurl, not so fine!
